Dryer vent warning signs, and what you can check yourself

A clogged vent makes your dryer slower, hotter and more likely to start a fire. Most of the warning signs are easy to spot.

The lint filter catches most of the lint, but not all of it. What gets through settles in the duct between the dryer and the outside of the house, and over time it narrows the path the hot air has to take.

That matters for more than your energy bill. In U.S. Fire Administration figures for 2018–2020, failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to the ignition of home clothes dryer fires, at 31%.

Warning signs of a clogged dryer vent

  • Loads take two cycles. Damp air isn't leaving fast enough.
  • The dryer is hot to the touch, or the laundry room gets noticeably warm.
  • A burning smell when the dryer runs. Stop using it until it's checked.
  • The outside flap barely moves while the dryer is on.
  • Lint collects around the outside vent or behind the dryer.

What you can do yourself

The U.S. Fire Administration's dryer safety guidance covers the basics:

  1. Clean the lint filter before and after each cycle, and never run the dryer without it.
  2. Clean behind the dryer, where lint builds up.
  3. Check the vent behind the dryer isn't damaged, crushed or restricted.
  4. Make sure the outdoor vent covering opens when the dryer is running.
  5. Plug the dryer directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord with a major appliance.

Pushing the dryer back against the wall is the most common way the short duct behind it gets crushed. Leave a few inches of space.

When to call for a professional cleaning

A short, straight wall vent can sometimes be brushed out with a kit. Call for a cleaning when:

  • The vent runs a long way, has several bends, or ends on the roof
  • You've cleaned the filter and checked the flap, and drying is still slow
  • You find lint packed inside the duct or the outside hood
  • The transition duct behind the dryer is plastic or thin foil and crushed

A full dryer vent cleaning clears the entire run to the outside, checks the flap and confirms airflow with the dryer running.

A note for San Diego homes

Coastal neighborhoods spend much of late spring and summer under grey, damp marine-layer skies, peaking from May to August. On those days fewer clothes go on the line and more go in the dryer, which sends more lint down the vent. Watch the drying times through that stretch.

Frequently asked questions

Is a slow dryer always a vent problem?

Not always. A failing heating element or thermostat can also cause it. But the vent is the first thing to check, because it's common and it's a fire risk.

What duct material should be behind my dryer?

Your dryer's manual lists the duct types it allows. Flexible plastic or foil is easy to flatten and catches lint, so metal duct is the usual choice.

Can a clogged vent damage the dryer?

It makes the dryer run longer and hotter, which puts extra wear on its parts and can trip its safety cutoffs.
