San Diego gets most of its rain between December and March, which is when a cracked crown or loose flashing finally shows up as a stain on the ceiling. Clear Sky Chimney & Air Duct repairs and sweeps chimneys across the city, and cleans dryer vents and ducts while we're there.

What we do
Coastal neighborhoods sit under the marine layer for much of late spring and summer, while inland mesas a few miles east stay sunny and dry. The chimneys and vents in both get the same whole-system look before we recommend anything.
Most requested Creosote, soot, leaves and nesting material brushed out of the flue and smoke chamber, with the firebox vacuumed and the damper checked before we leave.

A look at the flue, crown, flashing and firebox against the NFPA 211 annual-inspection standard, with a deeper camera inspection when you buy, sell or reline.

Cracked crowns, loose bricks, failed mortar joints and leaking flashing traced to the cause, then repaired so water stops getting into the masonry.

Supply and return ducts, registers and the air handler cleaned as one system, when there's a real reason to: visible mold, pests, or heavy dust coming out of the vents.

High demand Lint cleared from the whole run between the dryer and the outside flap, plus a check that the duct isn't crushed and the flap opens.

A cap sized to your flue keeps rain, birds and debris out and puts a mesh screen between your fire and the roof.

San Diego chimney help
The city is built across mesas separated by roughly 200 canyons, with the San Diego River running east to west through the middle. That spread means a house in Point Loma and one in Rancho Bernardo live with different weather, but both chimneys face the same threats: winter rain finding a gap at the top, and dry Santa Ana winds that blow from fall into spring.
We start with what you've noticed and an inspection of the chimney from the firebox to the cap. From there it may be a crown or flashing repair, a new cap, or simply a sweep.

Why San Diego homeowners call us
Chimney work is easiest and most useful in the dry months, before the first winter storms and before the fireplace gets its main use. We plan sweeps, cap installs and masonry repairs with that window in mind and give you a written price before any of it starts.
How a visit works
Use the form and tell us what you've noticed: smoke, a smell, water stains, a dryer that runs long. Mention the age of the house if you know it.
The technician checks the chimney, ducts or vent run, shows you what was found and puts the recommended work and its price in writing.
Once you approve, we do the work and test it: a draw check on the fireplace, airflow at the registers, or the dryer flap opening on its own.
San Diego chimneys
Rain is rare for much of the year in San Diego, with average annual totals under 12 inches, so a chimney can hide a problem for months. Then a run of winter storms arrives and water gets in through the crown, the flashing or an open flue all at once.
The fix usually starts at the top: seal or rebuild the crown, re-flash where the chimney meets the roof, and fit a cap so rain can't fall straight down the flue. Interior damage, like rusted dampers or cracked flue tiles, gets repaired once the water is stopped.

Near the coast, the marine layer keeps air cool and damp for long stretches between May and August. A fireplace that's sat unused through that season can smell smoky when the humidity rises, a sign there's buildup worth clearing.
A sweep and inspection in late summer or early fall, before the wet months and before you light the first fire, keeps the flue clear and gives time to fix anything we find.

FAQs
Short answers to what homeowners ask before booking.
Late summer to early fall. Most of the city's rain falls between December and March, so getting the crown, flashing and cap sorted before then stops the next leak. It also lands before most households start using their fireplaces.
It can. Santa Ana winds blow hot or dry from September through April, and October is regarded as the start of fire season in San Diego. A cap with a mesh screen keeps sparks from leaving the flue and stops wind-blown debris from getting in, so it's worth checking before that stretch.
If the home has been through a nearby wildfire, a heavy storm or a strong earthquake since the chimney was last inspected, CSIA recommends a Level 2 inspection, which includes a camera look inside the flue. The Cedar Fire in 2003 and the 2007 fires that reached parts of Rancho Bernardo affected many San Diego neighborhoods.
We serve the city of San Diego, from coastal communities like La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Point Loma to inland areas such as Clairemont, Mira Mesa and Rancho Bernardo. If you're unsure whether your street is covered, mention it in your request.
Yes. Tell us in your request and we'll plan for both. Many San Diego homes run the dryer all year, so the vent often needs attention more than the fireplace does. See dryer vent cleaning.
