Sample project: a split mortar crown was broken out and a new concrete crown poured around the flue tiles.
The problem
Sample scenario: water stains showed on the ceiling beside the fireplace after a winter storm, and the crown had cracks running out from every flue tile.
What we did
- Broke out the cracked crown down to solid brick.
- Set rebar and a form around the flue tiles.
- Poured and troweled a new crown that sheds water past the brick.
- Left a gap at each flue tile so the clay can expand without cracking the crown.
The result
Sample outcome: a new crown that slopes water off the chimney instead of letting it soak into the brick.
